Imam Husayn was the son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (the final Rashidun Caliph and first Shia Imam) and Fatima Zahra, daughter of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muhammad (pbuh) was Islam’s holiest Prophet and the final messenger of God to mankind. The word for “God” in Arabic is “Allah”. The followers of Prophet Muhammad are called “Muslims”. Husayn is an important figure in Islam as he was a member of the Ahl al-Bayt (the household of Muhammad) as well as being an Imam. He is also called Abul Ahraar – the father of freedom.The definition of freedom in Islam is when you have attached yourself only to Allah and cut ties with all other entities. When Imam Husayn (pbuh) saw that the freedom brought by the Prophet of submission only to God was being eroded by the prison of allegiance to the government or state over and above the laws of God, he became a freedom fighter; A Shaheed– one who recognizes and declares the truth of freedom and stands by it – freeing the oppressed by being an example, a paradigm, worthy of being followed. We have a famous slogan – “Every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala”. All of us are accountable as freedom of truth transcends all color, creed, cultures and to free ourselves we have to oppose those who play God speaking out against their tyranny.
